The
HIGH SCHOOL & COLLEGE INTENSIVE offers pre-professional training
for the student who is focused on dance. The six-week program is
an immersion in dance at the highest possible level. Students take
technique classes in Ballet and Modern dance. These may be supplemented
with classes in Jazz, Dance Composition, Pointe, Tap, Trapeze and
Repertory. In addition to intensive dance technique and elective
classes, students will have the opportunity to learn and perform
original choreography and repertory by faculty and guest artists.
All students have the opportunity to observe and interact with faculty
and guest artists whose backgrounds include performing with Paul
Taylor, Alvin Ailey, David Parsons, José Limon, Robert Battle, the
Royal Danish Ballet, the Hamburg Ballet, the Mannheim Ballet, New
York Theater Ballet, Twyla Tharp, The Lion King and others.
The Dance Department is led by Linda
Kent, who toured internationally for over twenty-one years as
a principal dancer with Alvin
Ailey American Dance Theater and the Paul
Taylor Dance Company. Her national television appearances include
Ailey's On Being Black, Memories and Visions, Cosby Celebrates
Ailey, and five Taylor programs for the PBS Series, Dance
In America. Miss Kent has staged works by Taylor, Ailey
and David Parsons for dance companies around the world, including
Joffrey Ballet,
Bat Dor Company
of Israel, Les
Grands Ballets Canadiens, London Contemporary Dance Theater,
La Scala Opera Ballet and the Juilliard School. Miss Kent graduated
from the Juilliard
School and has been on its faculty since 1984. She has also
taught at the Taylor School, Jacob's
Pillow Dance Festival, the University
of Illinois, and Wake
Forest University. In 1992, she was the first modern dancer
invited to teach at the Bolshoi Ballet School in Moscow.
