Ryan Whittal is a very versatile performer who took to the stage in high school and hasn’t stopped since! Ryan attended the University of Windsor studying Vocal Music and Drama in Education. From here, Ryan made his way to Toronto and studied at the prestigious Randolph Academy for the Performing Arts – honorary patron Gregory Hines, where he graduated the “Triple Threat Program” with Honors. Mr. Whittal continued his studies with Second City Toronto in Advance Improv/ Writing and is currently enrolled in the online writing program with Second City Chicago. With a strong passion for learning and professional development, Ryan has studied Improv Acting at the Upright Citizens Brigade founded by Amy Poehler and was fast tracked into the proficient Improv Program with the infamous Groundlings,which is home to such alum as Kristen Wiig, Melissa McCarthy and Will Ferrell, in Los Angeles. Ryan has worked hands on with top Voice Over Casting Directors such as Sara Jane Sherman and Aaron Drown of Disney, and Emmy Award Winning voice director and performer Stevie Vallance. Ryan was fortunate to attend 2016’s TAAFI (Toronto Animation Arts Festival International) where he was taught by Pixar’s Allison Rutland, Hanna Barbara’s Will Eto and Walt Disney’s legendary animator, Eric Goldberg who famously crafted The Gennie for “Aladdin”, voiced by the late Robin Williams. Ryan holds a Grade Six Certificate with the Canadian Royal Conservatory of Music in piano and theory, and also plays the trombone and other brass instruments. Currently he studies voice with Broadway Conductor Jeffrey Huard, New York’s Susan Eichhorn Young and Toronto’s top musical pianist and conductor, Jeannie Wyse.
Ryan has found himself on set for an episode of “GLEE” directed by Ryan Murphy with guest star Gwyneth Paltro, “Rake” starring Greg Kinnear for FOX Television and ABC’s “Grey’s Anatomy”. Internationally, Ryan has performed in “Grease Lightning”– a tour of US Naval Bases in Japan, where he played the loveable nerd, Eugene. He had a blast sailing upon the high seas with Disney Cruise Line, notable performances include “Disney Dreams”, “The Art of the Story”, “80’s Party” and “The Golden Mickeys”, directed by Broadway’s Diane Paulus. He has enjoyed his time performing for various charitable organizations such as Broadway Bares’ “Strip-opoly” directed by the Tony Award winning, Jerry Mitchell, “Sondheim in September”and “FashionCares”. Ryan was hand selected for the Stirling Festival Theatre’s sell out production of “Treasure Island” as the lead character, young Jim Hastings, and as the Jack of Hearts in, “Alice In Wonderland”. Ryan performed in ”Fairy Tale Ending” in globally renowned Stratford, Ontario’s Spring Works Festival, and in Toronto’s Artscape Wychwood Barns Theatre.Other favorites include “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat” with Silvermist Productions, and “Little Women”, which was reviewed to great success. He participated in “Dancing In The Dust” – a workshop performance of Canadian composer David Warrack’s beautiful musical – at the Music Theatre Symposium for the Shaw Festival. Ryan performed in the Betty Award nominated production of “The Producers” for Stage West Calgary. He is excited to have been invited to perform on his former classmate’s, Anjulie’s debut album “ANJULIE” for Universal Records. Ryan is a proud member of CAEA/ACTRA, Canada’s professional actors’ unions.
Ryan enjoys sharing his expanding skills and knowledge of the arts with both children and adults and has been a faculty member of the Randolph Academy Kids Program since 2007. Mr. Whittal was asked to be a faculty member at the prestigious 50th Anniversary of the National Music Camp of Canada, where he performed and taught music theatre to great praise and success and for Niagara On The Lake’s newest and upcoming theatre for young people, The Yellow Door Theatre Project. Ryan began teaching at Toronto’s The S.P.A.C.E. in 2011 and with the Ovation Academy – one of his annual summer camp destinations for instructing since 2010. Ryan was employed with Goodlife Fitness – Canada’s only major chain of fitness clubs, for over 10 years, where he was a passionate and sought out fitness instructor in several of the world famous “Les Mills” programs and can now be found teaching for Equinox Fitness – the luxury fitness empire from the United States.
